Here are Emilia’s top tips on caring for hair extensions.
Make sure to choose the right type of extension process for your hair and lifestyle. Always discuss your individual needs with a qualified technician before you make a decision. Glue free methods are the kindest to your natural hair.
Wash using a mild shampoo at least three times a week and always use a leave in conditioner.
Once you have washed your hair don’t wrap it in a towel on top of your head. Simply blot your hair with a towel and use a hairdryer. Never let them dry naturally.
Care for clip in extensions as much as you would your own hair. Do not scrub, instead squelch shampoo along the lengths of your clip-in hair extensions and rinse in a downward direction along the lengths, apply conditioner in a downward direction and then leave in the basin for a couple of minutes. Spray on some protein spray and then hang to dry.
No matter how tired you are when you get home, never sleep in clip-in hair extensions as the clips can break your natural hair during the night and in some cases cause bald patches.
Always use heat protection spray if using heated appliances as otherwise you will end up damaging the hair.
Tie hair up loosely before you go to bed, to stop hair from tangling while you sleep.
Only use semi-permanent colourings, if you intend to colour your hair extensions, that are free from ammonia & peroxide bleach.
Don’t wrap your hair in a towel as this can cause tangling. Blot excess water with a towel without excessive rubbing.
Don’t neglect your extensions when on holidays! Spray protein spray on to your hair extensions and tie in a plait or braid while sunbathing or swimming. Always wash chlorine/sea water from the hair straight after swimming and comb out your hair with a nylon bristle brush to ensure you don’t pull at your hair extensions and break your natural hair.
